Yokohama Municipal Subway Information

The system is a rapid transit system in the city of Yokohama in Japan. The system began operations on 12th April 1972 and presently has 2 lines (Blue and Green) that serve 42 stations. The network has a total system length of 53.4 kilometers (33.2 miles). It is operated by Yokohama City Transportation Bureau. Extension plans for the Blue line are underway.

Yokohama Municipal Subway Hours

The subway services start around 5:30 am and run until midnight. The trains arrive at a frequency of 5-6 minutes during rush hours.

Yokohama Municipal Subway Fares and Tickets

The subway fares are distance based and are charged as per the zone travelled. The tickets can be purchased either with cash or with PASMO (IC Card). Buying with PASMO card provides some discounts. For Zone 1, which is 0-3 km, a single adult ticket purchased with PASMO card costs 206 yen and the same purchased with cash costs 210 yen. A child ticket with PASMO costs 103 yen, while in cash costs 110 yen. Tickets can also be purchased for group of people. A group ticket consisting of 11 ordinary adult tickets, or 12 Off-Peak tickets, or 14 weekends / holiday tickets costs 2100 yen. Monthly passes are also available. A 1 month commuter pass costs 7980 yen, for 3 months, it costs 22,750 yen and the price of pass for 6 months costs 43,100 yen. A 1 month Student pass (from 13 years old) costs 4910 yen, while a 3 month and 6 month pass cost 14,000 yen and 26, 520 yen respectively. Student Pass (up to 12 years old) for 1, 3 and 6 months cost 2460, 7000 and 13,260 yen respectively.

Zone 2 is a distance of 3-7 km and an ordinary adult ticket purchased with PASMO costs 237 yen while when purchased with cash costs 240 yen. Similarly a child ticket costs 118 and 120 yen respectively. Adult commuters pass for 1, 3 and 6 months costs 9190, 26,200 and 49,630 yen respectively. Student pass (from 13 years old) for 1, 3 and 6 months costs 5650, 16110 and 30,510 yen respectively. Student pass (up to 12 years old) for 1, 3 and 6 months costs 2,830, 8,060 and 15, 260 yen. Group ticket of ordinary 11 tickets costs 2400 and 1200 yen for adult and child respectively.

For Zone 3, which is a distance of 7-11 km, an adult ticket purchased with PASMO costs 267 yen while when purchased with cash costs 270 yen. Similarly, a child ticket when purchased with PASMO or cash costs 133 and 140 yen respectively. Commuters pass for 1, 3 and 6 months costs 10,390 yen, 29, 620 yen and 56, 110 yen respectively. A Student pass (from 13 years old) costs 6,390 yen, 18,220 yen and 34, 510 yen respectively. A Student pass (up to 12 years old) costs 3,200 yen, 9,100 yen and 17, 260 yen respectively.

Yokohama Municipal Subway Rules and Tips

Vending machines are installed at all stations from where riders can purchase ordinary tickets, multiple tickets, travel passes and PASMO cards. Credit can also be added to PASMO cards, through these machines. The tickets and cards need to be validated at the ticket gates.

Bicycles are not allowed on the subway unless they are packed in a bike bag. Transit of small pets is allowed provided they are carried inside cages or carriers. Guide dogs accompanying disabled people are allowed on the subway. Carrying of explosives and other inflammable materials is strictly prohibited.


Women only cars have also been introduced on the Blue line. At the exit gates, the ordinary and multiple tickets are retained, while magnetic and 1 day passes are returned.

Yokohama Municipal Subway Lines

Currently Yokohama municipal subway operates through 2 lines serving 42 stations. The lines are recognized by name and color.

  • Blue line – Line 1&3 – Line 1 and 3 are operated as a single line and the metro runs from Shonandai Station to Azamino Station. Line1 was opened to the public in 1972 and line 3 was opened in 1985 and the length of the route is 40.4km serving 32 stations. All the stations in blue line are marked with B.
  • Green line – Line 4– Line 4 was opened in 2008 and the metro runs from Nakayama Station towards Hiyoshi Station. The length of the route is 13.0km serving 10 stations. The transfer between blue and green lines is possible at Center Kita and Center Minami. All the stations on Green line are marked G.
