Mumbai Metro Information

With the aim of reducing the traffic congestion in Mumbai, the construction of the metro began in the year 2008. A metro system with great plans, the metro currently operates on just 1 line, however, there are plans laid out for 3 more lines. If these expansion plans go through, it could be serving 93 stations in total. That is 81 more than the current number of stations it serves, which is 12. It took six years for the metro to begin operations, with the first ride commencing on the 8th of June 2014. An extremely popular means of transportation in the city, it boasts of an annual ridership of a 100 million. The 11.4 km long is operated by two separate companies. Line 1 is under the operations of Mumbai Metro One Private Limited whereas, line 3 will be operated by the Mumbai Metro Rail corporation limited.

Mumbai Metro Lines

Under Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro three lines have been planned. Line 1 would run between Versova and Ghatkopar, Line 2 would run between Charkop and Mankhurd and Line 3 would run between Colaba and SEEPZ. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by 2019. Phase 2 of Mumbai Metro would involve two lines; Line 4 between Charkop and Dahisar; and Line 5 between Ghatkopar and Mulund. Phase 2 of Mumbai Metro is likely to be completed by 2016. Phase 3 of Mumbai Metro is planned to have three lines: Line 6 between Andheri (E) and Dahisar (E); Line 7 between Hutatma Chowk and Ghatkopar and Line 8 between Sewri and Prabhadevi.

Mumbai Metro Fares

There are multiple types of tickets available to the passengers using the metro system. The minimum price for a single journey token is 10 Rs, while the maximum price is 40 Rs. A return-journey ticket is also available. The fare for it starts at 20 Rs and goes up to 60 Rs. For those who use the metro regularly, a bundle of 45 tickets which are valid for 30 days is also available. The price for this starts at 675 Rs and touches 900 Rs.


Children under the age of 3 get to travel for free. Another benefit for the children below the age of 12, on weekends they are allowed to use the metro for a flat rate of just 10 Rs.

Mumbai Metro Timings

The metro operates from around 05:00 am in the morning till either midnight, or close to midnight. With regard to the frequency of the trains, it fluctuates on the basis of the day as well as time of the day. Between Monday-Saturday, the trains have a headway of just 4 minutes during peak hours and 8 minutes off peak hours. While on Sundays and other public holidays, trains have a standard frequency of 8 minutes.

Just like most of the other metro systems around the world, the Mumbai metro offers special facilities which make the metro really accessible to the disabled people. Most of the stations are equipped with elevators and escalators, too. Another initiative to look after its people, seats are reserved for elderly people, disabled people and pregnant women as well.
