Kiev Metro Information

The first rapid transit to be built in Ukraine, the Kiev metro is one of the most important means of public transit in Kiev, Ukraine. It first began operations on the 6th of November 1960 and has grown considerably since. The network consists of 3 lines, serving 57 stations along a track length measuring 67.6 km long. Out of these 57 stations, Arsenalna is one of the deepest stations to be built in not only Ukraine, but the entire world. Although owned by the Kiev City Council, the metro is actually operated by Kyivskyi Metropoliten. The popularity and importance of this system is shown with its daily and annual ridership of 1.439 million(2012) and 536,2 million (2013), respectively.

Kiev Metro Timings and Frequency and Schedule

The metro services start around 5:45 am and run until midnight. The frequency of the trains is 30-150 seconds during peak hours. The frequency decreases during evenings and is 5 minutes after 8.00 pm, and further reduces to 10-15 minutes after 10.30 pm.

Kiev Metro Fares, Tickets and Cards

The Kiev metro system offers its passengers choices between 3 different types of tokens. Tokens, tickets for the duration of the trip, tickets which can be recharged again and again. The last two types of tickets are in the form of an electronic contactless card. It makes travelling quicker and more reliant. The collateral value for this card is 12 UAH.

Some metro station offers park and ride facilities to the metro passengers.

Kiev Metro Rules and Tips

A certain fee needs to be paid by the passengers as shipping fees, in case their luggage exceed the permitted dimensions of the metro. Adults are requested to keep children close while using the escalator. While on the train, it is advisable to hold the handrail provided for support.

Pets can use the metro service, provided they are small and can be kept in a cage of some sort. Childrens bicycles, skis, musical instruments etc can also be carried with proper packaging.

Flammables and explosive substances are prohibited within the metro network. Children bicycles can be carried on the metro but not adult bicycles, they too are prohibited. Smoking is not allowed at the stations, nor in the trains. Strangely, ice-creams are prohibited too. Any kind of photography and videography within the network is not allowed.

Kiev Metro Lines

Currently the metro has three lines where the stations are built deep underground. The lines are recognized by its name and color.
● Line 1 – line 1 colored in red is known by the name Sviatoshynsko – Brovarska. Line 1 was opened in 1960 and the metro offer service between Akademmistechko and Lisova. The length of the route is 22.6 km serving 18 stations. It takes 40 minutes to travel from one end to the other. It is the deepest line in the world.
● Line 2 – Line 2 colored in blue is known by the name Kurenivsko-Chervonoarmiyska. Line 2 was opened in 1976 and the metro offer service between Heroiv Dnipra and Teremky. The length of the route is 20.95 km serving 18 stations. It takes 31 minutes to travel from one end to the other.
● Line 3– Line 3 colored green is known by the name Syretsko- Pecherska. Line3 was opened in 1989 and the metro offer service between Syrets and Chervony Khutir. The length of the route is 23.9km serving 16 stations. It takes 44 minutes to travel from one end to the other.
● Line 4 is under construction and planned to be opened after 2017. The fourth line is going to be operating between Podilsko and Vyhurivska. It is considered a very important project, which is going to offer transfers to all the three other lines along its route. It is expected to be completely finished by the end of the next decade, hopefully by the year 2025.
